The first recipe for shortbread appears in a 16th-century English cookbook. This dessert is typically made with flour, sugar, baking powder or soda, salt, butter, milk or cream, and sometimes eggs. The dry ingredients are mixed together and then chopped with butter until the mixture resembles cornmeal. Then the wet ingredients are added, and the mixture is spread on a baking sheet and baked. In this recipe, the dough is sprinkled with sugar, and the finished shortbread is served with berries, ice cream, or whipped cream.
