American popovers literally spring out of their tins when baked under the influence of steam, hence their name. After baking, popovers develop a hollow interior, giving them a texture similar to Yorkshire pudding or choux pastry. Because these buns have a neutral flavor, they can be served with both hot dishes and sweet toppings. The popover batter is poured into a preheated pan, but if you don't have a special pan, they can be baked in metal muffin cups. Try hot popovers with butter and jam, stuffing as much of the delicious filling as possible into the hollow.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Preheat oven to 220°C.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, butter, and eggs. Make a well in the flour, pour in the milk mixture, and knead until smooth. Set the dough aside for 10 minutes.
- Preheat a nonstick popover pan for 6 minutes in the oven. Carefully remove the pan from the oven and grease the inside of the pan with vegetable shortening. Pour the batter into the pans and bake for 20 minutes without opening the oven. (Do not open the oven during baking.)
- Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking the popovers for another 20 minutes, until they are golden brown. Immediately after removing the popovers from the oven, pierce each one with a knife to release steam. Remove the popovers from the pan and serve immediately with butter and jam.
