Caipirinha is a Brazilian cocktail made with cachaça, lime, and sugar. The drink was invented by slaves working on sugarcane plantations and means "country bumpkin" in Portuguese. Now this invigorating and refreshing cocktail is sold throughout Brazil. However, you can also make your own. A Caipirinha is typically made in a large pitcher for a group. Lime is crushed with sugar in a pitcher, filled with ice, and topped with cachaça. Although Brazilian law specifies this specific composition for a Caipirinha, there are many variations. Other fruits are used alongside lime, and cachaça, since it is difficult to find outside of Brazil, is often substituted with rum or vodka.

We recommend
Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Place citrus slices and sugar in the bottom of a decanter. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, mash the fruit to release juice. Once enough juice has been extracted that the sugar has begun to dissolve, pour the cachaça into the decanter and stir.
- Fill short glasses with ice and the cocktail. Do not add crushed fruit pieces. Garnish with mint and lime. Add a cane stem, if desired.
