Time: 1 hour.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 6 sandwiches

If you think a delicious ice cream sandwich can only be made with waffles or cookies, you're wrong. You can use croutons instead! Giada De Laurentiis suggests making an Italian-style ice cream sandwich: slices of bread with dried fruits and nuts are pan-fried until golden brown, then spread with Nutella (or any other chocolate-hazelnut spread), and then layered with a thick layer of vanilla ice cream filled with chocolate candy pieces. This ice cream is also easy to make at home!

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 cups vanilla gelato or ice cream
  • 8 hazelnut chocolates, such as Baci, coarsely chopped
  • 12 slices bread with dried fruits and nuts
  • 0.5 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Place the ice cream in a bowl and let it soften slightly. Stir in the chopped candies with a silicone spatula. Cover and freeze for 40 minutes until the ice cream hardens.
  2. Preheat a grill pan over medium heat. Grill the bread until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Spread chocolate-hazelnut spread on each slice.

  3. Spoon 1/3 cup ice cream between 6 sandwiches. Top with the remaining sandwich slices. Serve immediately or freeze for up to 5 hours before serving.
