Unlike crispy traditional sugar cookies, these cookies are chewier, but still not entirely crunchy. A soft center is complemented by a crust of colorful sprinkles or sugar that provides a pleasant crunch. You can decorate the cookies as directed in the recipe, or roll the dough balls completely in sprinkles before baking.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Stir in the egg and vanilla. Gradually whisk in the dry ingredients. Add enough sour milk to moisten the dough and make it soft, not runny.

  3. Scoop 1 teaspoon of dough into balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Using a pastry brush or your fingers, brush the tops of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk and flatten them slightly. Sprinkle with sprinkles or sugar.
  4. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until lightly golden. Let stand for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
