How to Make - Homemade White Sauce Mix

To make a sauce from the mixture, add cool water and heat until thickened. To replace a 16-ounce jar of store-bought Alfredo sauce, combine 3/4 cup of the mixture with 1 3/4 cups of water. Season the sauce to your taste; add dried thyme, basil, tarragon, or marjoram. You can make this sauce cheesy by simply adding any freshly grated cheese: Cheddar, Gouda, Havarti, Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, or Swiss.

This sauce is excellent in casseroles and can be used to quickly make macaroni and cheese or gratins. This white sauce is a basic recipe, and everyone should know how to make it. You can double this recipe if you cook often. Store the mixture in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
