A tip for impatient or forgetful bakers who don't have time to wait for butter to soften: grate a block of cold butter on a coarse grater and let it sit for a couple of minutes. There you have it! Room-temperature butter, ready to be added to your favorite cookie and cake doughs.

For homemade vegetable noodles, place the grater on its side, with the large holes facing up. Then grate the trimmed zucchini, running it lengthwise.

Freshly toasted bread crumbs add crunch to casseroles, gratins, and pasta. Use up day-old baguettes, leftover toast, or a forgotten sandwich: grate pieces or slices of bread using a coarse grater. (Freezing the slices will harden them and make them easier to grate.) Use the crumbs immediately or store them in a zip-lock plastic bag; no need to defrost.
