Caramelized figs are a wonderful appetizer that, with their exquisite flavor and appearance, will add a festive touch to any dish. Serve them with ice cream, tea, a cheese platter, or even with meats. Whatever your imagination allows. To give the figs a beautiful glossy finish, simmer them in equal parts red wine, water, and sugar. Add a citrusy twist to the figs' sweetness by adding lemon zest.

Recipe:

Halve 2 cups of fresh figs and place them in a small saucepan with 2 strips of lemon zest and 2 tablespoons each of red wine, water, and brown sugar. Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the figs are tender, 20-25 minutes.

Serve caramelized figs on toasted bread with cream cheese or on ricotta crackers as an appetizer. Figs can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Serve at room temperature..
