Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Preheat a waffle iron to medium-high heat. Preheat the oven to 90°C (to keep the waffles warm). Sift the flour, cocoa powder, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt into a small bowl and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, combine half the chocolate and butter and melt, stirring, over medium heat until smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in the sugar and eggs. Pour in the flour mixture and remaining chocolate and mix well. Add 2 tbsp. liqueur, if desired.
- Lightly grease the bottom and top of a waffle iron with butter. Fill the waffle iron three-quarters full (the surface should be free of batter). Carefully close the lid and bake until the waffles are set and crispy around the edges, 4-6 minutes. While you bake the remaining waffles, keep the finished waffles warm in a preheated oven at 195°F (90°C) or wrap them in foil on a plate.
- If desired, top each waffle with ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, sprinkles, and cherries in liqueur.
Culinary advice: The waffles can be frozen in plastic freezer bags for up to 1 month. Reheat in a mini oven at 150°C until heated through and crispy.
