In the United States, stuffing is traditionally served with turkey at Thanksgiving, but it's also a great side dish for any holiday. The stuffing is baked separately from the bird, which has a big advantage: you can prepare much more of the side dish than the bird can hold, especially if the main dish is a smaller chicken. This basic recipe includes the basic stuffing ingredients: stale bread, onion, celery, apple, herbs, and an egg. If desired, you can supplement these with other vegetables or dried fruits (such as dried cranberries), ground meat or sausage, or use any other bread you have on hand. It's important that the bread be toasted or stale.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 2 cups of onion
  • 2 cups of celery
  • 2 apples
  • 2 eggs
  • 16 cups of white bread

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Preheat oven to 190°C.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 110g of butter. Add 2 cups each diced onion and celery, 2 sliced ​​apples, and 1 tbsp each chopped sage and thyme; season with salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes.

  3. Add 3 cups of chicken broth and bring to a boil. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 eggs and 1/4 cup of finely chopped parsley; add 1/6 cup of cubed stale country white bread, then add the vegetable mixture and stir.
  4. Transfer everything to a greased 3-quart baking dish and arrange pieces of butter on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake the bread filling for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake until golden brown, another 20 minutes.
