How to Keep a Cut Avocado from Browning

Some foods, such as mushrooms, potatoes, and others, begin to darken after being sliced. Avocado is one of them. This article provides a simple yet highly effective way to prevent it from browning after being sliced.

How to Keep a Cut Avocado from Browning

Avocado Avocado is a very healthy and tasty fruit. It's used primarily in salads and appetizers. Unfortunately, like some other foods, such as apples or potatoes, it quickly begins to darken when cut. If an avocado is cut for a salad and guests are late, the dish may look quite unsightly by the time they arrive.

There are several ways to keep a cut avocado from turning brown.
Lemon juice prevents avocados from browning.

These include the following: leaving the bone in place, smearing the fruit with lemon juice, immersing it in purified form in water for a long time, storage in an airtight container along with a chopped onion... Yes, indeed, all these actions slow down the process of avocado darkening, but at the same time they somewhat spoil its taste and texture.

Why does avocado turn dark?

The reason is that the fruit's peel contains an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase. When it comes into contact with oxygen, the avocado turns brown.

The method we'll share with you today comes from British chef Raymond Blanc, who teaches culinary arts at his renowned school in Oxford. This method never fails. The avocado will stay fresh and green for several hours after cutting!

So, you need a large pot of boiling water, timer or stopwatch, a bowl of cold water and ice cubes and ripe avocado.
preparing for the avocado cooking process

Let's begin the process! Place the avocado in boiling water and leave it there for exactly 10 seconds, no more and no less. If you leave it there longer, it will lose its freshness and begin to cook, but if you leave it there less, the enzyme won't be destroyed, and the fruit will still darken.
Place the avocado in boiling water for 10 seconds.

After 10 seconds, remove the avocado. Remove the fruit from the pan with a slotted spoon and place it in a bowl of ice water to prevent further cooking. Keep it in the cold water until it cools completely, then remove it and pat dry with a paper towel.
Place the avocado in a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking.

You only need to process one fruit at a time, bringing the water in the pan to a boil each time.

Now the avocado is ready to peel and use in dishes. After this treatment, it can stay green for 4 to 6 hours, but if the recipe uses lemon juice, it can stay green even longer. If you need to extend the shelf life of the sliced avocado even further, cover it with plastic wrap.
