How to Make Chocolate-Covered Apples "Spiderweb"
Go back Print version

Time: 50 min.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 8 lollipops

These healthy apple-shaped candies are dipped in white and dark chocolate and feature slices on sticks. For this dessert, it's best to use firm, tart apples; they won't fall apart when you insert a stick, and they pair beautifully with the sweet chocolate. If you're making these treats for Halloween, decorate the glazed apples with a contrasting spiderweb pattern. It's easy to create with a wooden skewer or toothpick. These "candies" on sticks can be wrapped in individual clear bags, tied with pretty ribbons, and given to guests attending a masquerade.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, stemmed
  • 120 g chopped dark chocolate

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Slice the apples lengthwise (from stem to tip) into 4 thick discs. Remove all visible seeds, leaving the core intact. The outer slices will be convex; trim a small piece off so they lay flat. Pierce the bottom of each apple slice with a wooden popsicle stick and push it all the way into the center of the apple.

  3. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and microwave on medium power in 30-second intervals, stirring, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. In another microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate and the remaining 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and microwave on medium power in 30-second intervals, stirring, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
  4. Dip half of the apple slices completely in dark chocolate, let the excess drip off, and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Dip the remaining apple slices in white chocolate. Let them sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to allow the chocolate to thicken slightly.
  5. Transfer the remaining dark and white chocolate into two separate small zip-lock bags and snip off a small corner of each bag. Pipe 3-4 circles of dark chocolate, working from the edge to the center, onto the white-glazed apples, and vice versa. Using a toothpick, draw lines through the circles from the center to the edge to create a web. Refrigerate the apples for 15-20 minutes to allow the glaze to set.
