You don't have to go to Chicago to enjoy their signature hot dog, topped with classic toppings. Chicago hot dog sausages are typically boiled in water, but this recipe suggests steaming them. This will give the sausage an even more flavorful flavor, and the steamed bun will be especially soft. Traditional Chicago hot dog toppings include yellow mustard, pickles, tomato, onion, small pickled chili peppers, and Chicago neon green relish, which can be substituted with regular relish if desired. All of this is served on a poppy seed bun.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 4 beef sausages
  • 4 poppy seed hot dog buns
  • Yellow mustard
  • 1 pickled cucumber, cut lengthwise into 4 pieces
  • 1 medium tomato, cut into 8 wedges
  • Chicago relish
  • Half a sweet white onion, diced very finely
  • 8 small pickled chili peppers
  • Celery salt

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Fill a large saucepan with 1–2 inches of water and place it in a steamer basket. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and bring to a boil. Add the sausages to the steamer basket, cover with a lid, and steam until heated through, about 5 minutes. Add the buns to the saucepan, cover with a lid, and steam until warm, about 1 minute.
  2. Remove the buns from the pan and sprinkle the inside of each with mustard. Place a sausage on top, then place one slice of pickle on one side of the sausage and two slices of tomato on the other side.

  3. Top with more mustard and relish, sprinkle with onion, and add the peppers. Sprinkle with celery salt.

    Note

If you can't find poppy seed buns, use regular buns and sprinkle poppy seeds on the hot dog at the end.

If you can't find Chicago relish, substitute regular sweet pickle relish.

You can use any pickled chili peppers.
