How to Make Italian Marinara Sauce

Marinara is a traditional Italian sauce made from tomatoes, garlic, spices, and onions. It's easy to find at the store, but homemade marinara is much more flavorful and delicious. All the ingredients are readily available, and homemade marinara sauce can be made in just 20 minutes.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 1 can (800 g) of canned pureed tomatoes in their own juice
  • 1 tbsp. l. olive oil
  • 1/4 tbsp. grated onion
  • 3 chopped garlic cloves
  • A pinch of red hot pepper flakes
  • 8 chopped fresh basil leaves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion, garlic, and red pepper, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, and bay leaf, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat.
  2. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the bay leaf.
    Exit: 4 tbsp.
