How to Make Pizza Marinara Sauce
Go back Print version

Time: 1 hour 20 min.

Marinara sauce is ideal for many Italian dishes. Homemade marinara sauce is incredibly easy to make using canned tomatoes in their own juice. It's delicious and rich, and unlike store-bought, it's made with only natural ingredients and is sugar- and gluten-free. You can make it a day in advance and refrigerate it. It'll be even more flavorful once it's allowed to steep. The next day, reheat it and use it in your dishes, or simply toss it with cooked pasta and enjoy.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 cans of 900g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 0.5 cups olive oil
  • 2 small onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the celery, carrots, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and black pepper. Cook until all vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add the tomatoes and bay leaf and simmer over low heat until the sauce thickens, about 1 hour. Remove and discard the bay leaf. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
    Output: 1.8 l.

  3. The sauce can be made a day ahead. Let it cool, then cover and refrigerate. Reheat over medium heat before using.
