In culinary circles, we often encounter dishes that today have a touch of sophistication, but were originally created for economic reasons. French toast, essentially sweet croutons, was, according to one theory, invented so that medieval knights wouldn't be considered poor and could treat their guests to dessert—often the most expensive dish at a banquet, as ingredients like nuts were brought from far away. Hence another name for French toast: "Poor Knight." Although this particular recipe would more accurately be called "Wealthy Knight!"

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 sticky buns with cinnamon and icing sticky buns
  • 3 tablespoons softened cream cheese
  • 2 tsp maple syrup, plus extra for topping
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • Butter or vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cups semi-skimmed milk with 1.5-2% fat content

Recipes with similar ingredients: sweet bun, cream cheese, chocolate chips (granules), eggs, milk, toasts, cinnamon

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 170°C.
  2. Beat cream cheese with 2 teaspoons maple syrup and cinnamon until smooth.

Cut the tops and bottoms of the buns to about 5 cm (2 inches) tall, and make a horizontal slit almost down the middle, but don't cut all the way through. Spread the inside of each bun with cream cheese frosting and sprinkle with chocolate chips.

  3. Heat an ovenproof skillet over medium heat and grease it with butter and/or vegetable oil. Beat the egg and milk together and dip the rolls in the mixture on both sides. Cook the French toast for about 4 minutes per side.
  4. Then bake the toasts for 5-8 minutes, until the chocolate melts in the center. Serve immediately with maple syrup, or for a richer dessert, top with a scoop of ice cream drizzled with maple syrup.
