Thick slices of sourdough bread are soaked in an egg custard with cinnamon and vanilla and fried in butter, dusted with powdered sugar, creating a wonderful caramelized crust. The insides are tender, creamy, and just the right amount of sweet. Serve for breakfast or dessert, drizzled generously with maple syrup.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Cut the bread into 8 large wedges. In a large baking dish, combine the eggs, buttermilk, cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Add the bread and turn occasionally until completely coated, about 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 120°C (250°F).
- Place the powdered sugar in a fine-mesh sieve. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add half the bread and sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. Cook, turning frequently and dusting with powdered sugar, until golden brown and caramelized, 10-12 minutes (add more butter to the skillet if needed).
- Transfer the French toast to a baking sheet and keep in a warm oven. Add another 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan and repeat with the remaining bread. Serve the French toast with maple syrup.
