French toast made from baguette soaked in a dark rum egg custard, served with rum ice cream and rum maple syrup. An elegant treat for Sunday brunch! To prevent the toast from falling apart when toasted, use toasted or slightly stale bread.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 120°C (250°F). Slice the baguette diagonally into eight 1-cm-thick slices. In a large baking dish, combine the eggs with the cream, sugar, and 3 tablespoons of rum. Add the bread and soak, turning occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Remove the baguette before it becomes soggy.
  2. In a large nonstick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add half of the bread and toast until golden brown and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a baking sheet and keep in a warm oven. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet and toast the remaining bread.

  3. Meanwhile, combine the maple syrup with the remaining 1 tablespoon rum in a small bowl and microwave for about 1 minute. Serve the French toast with maple rum syrup and ice cream.
