If you have stale or day-old croissants left over, make French toast for breakfast or dessert. This recipe uses a single pan for the toast, making it convenient for serving several people. Preparation:

    Step 1
  • In a large bowl, whisk the eggs with 1/4 cup sugar, milk, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Place the croissants in a single layer in an 8-inch square ovenproof dish.
  • Step 2
  • Pour the egg mixture over the croissants, then place a plate on top and press down so they're submerged. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour.
  • Step 3
  • Preheat oven to 175°C.
  • Step 4
  • Remove the croissants from the plate, cover the baking dish with foil, and bake until set, about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and set the oven to broil.
  • Step 5
  • Uncover the pan, sprinkle with the remaining 1 tablespoon sugar, and broil until the sugar begins to bubble in spots, about 2 minutes.
  • Step 6
  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the jam with 1/4 cup water and microwave for 1-2 minutes. Serve with French toast.
