The New Orleans Sazerac is considered one of America's oldest cocktails. This mixture of rye whiskey, bitters, absinthe, sugar, and lemon zest is a true classic, crafted by generations of New Orleans bartenders. Follow this step-by-step recipe precisely, and you'll never go wrong.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 1 cube of sugar
  • 75 ml rye whiskey
  • 3 drops Peychaud's bitters
  • 2 drops of Angostura
  • A dash of absinthe
  • 1 lemon peel

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Chill one Old Fashioned glass and use the other for mixing (this cocktail is not shaken). Place a sugar cube in the glass. Add a couple of drops of water and stir until the sugar forms a paste. Pour in the whiskey and both bitters. Add ice cubes and stir.
  2. Pour a small amount of absinthe into a chilled glass and swirl it around inside; discard any excess. Strain the cocktail into the glass containing the absinthe. Squeeze the lemon peel oil into the cocktail and toss it into the glass. Serve immediately.
