This fruit salad, with the vibrant flavor and aroma of pears and star anise, is perfect as a light appetizer or elegant dessert. Make a sugar syrup with star anise, tint it with a little grenadine, and toss in dried cranberries to soak. Serve the sliced pears with the aromatic syrup, and add a touch of tartness with a squirt of sparkling Prosecco.

Combine 0.5 cups each of sugar and water, 3 star anise, and a pinch of salt in a saucepan and cook, stirring, until syrupy, 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 0.5 teaspoon of grenadine, and a few dried cranberries. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate overnight. Pour the syrup over the sliced pears and top with a generous dollop of Prosecco.
