The Smashburger fast-food chain places special emphasis on its signature patty frying method. Ground beef balls are placed on a buttered griddle and flattened with a spatula for 10 seconds. This seals in all the juices and prevents them from escaping during frying. Thanks to this technique, frying the patties takes just three minutes. Sprinkle them with a mixture of onion and garlic powder and smoked paprika, and one minute before they're done, top them with slices of cheese to melt them. The beef and cheese patties are served on buns with mayonnaise, ketchup, tomato, lettuce, and red onion.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- Heat a griddle or large cast-iron skillet over medium heat for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, and brine. In a separate small bowl, combine the onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
- Form the ground beef into 4 balls. Lightly grease a skillet with butter and toast the buns, cut-side down, in batches until golden brown, 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
- Grease the skillet again with butter and add 1 beef patty. Press firmly with two large, crossed metal spatulas for exactly 10 seconds, then carefully lift the spatulas. Sprinkle the patty with a small amount of the spice mixture and continue frying, without turning, until well-browned, 1.5 to 2 minutes. At this point, begin frying the next patty.
- Flip the patty, sprinkle with spices, and top with a slice of cheese. Continue cooking until the cheese melts around the edges and the patty is golden brown on the bottom, about 1 more minute. Repeat with the remaining ground meat.
- Spread mayonnaise sauce and ketchup on the buns. Top with patties, then pickles, tomatoes, red onion, and lettuce.
