Make the popular American Sloppy Joe sandwich with meat sauce instead of a patty in an unexpected Korean twist—it'll be delicious! This recipe adds new ingredients to the traditional ground pork and beef: pear, sesame oil, and spicy Korean gochujang paste. They infuse the meat sauce with a fantastic flavor. Serve it between two sesame seed buns; you can also serve the meat sauce on lettuce leaves without the buns. And for a quick side dish, prepare some sweet and spicy pickles.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


Korean-Style Sloppy Joe Sandwich

  • 450 g of ground beef
  • 220 g of minced pork
  • 1 Asian pear or Bosc pear
  • 1 onion, red or yellow
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 2.5 cm ginger root
  • Neutral vegetable oil, such as peanut or safflower
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup Korean gochujang paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp dark sesame oil
  • 4-6 soft hamburger buns
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, fresh fingerling peppers or jalapeños, or pickled jalapeños

Quick pickled cucumbers

  • 1 large cucumber or 4 small ones
  • Approximately 1/4 tbsp. rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. ultrafine sugar
  • 1 tbsp Korean chili powder or chili paste
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp. dark sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Quick pickled cucumbers:

    Slice the cucumber into 0.5-0.3 cm thick slices. In a bowl, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, chili flakes, salt, and sesame oil. Add the sliced ​​cucumbers and toss to combine.
  2. Korean-Style Sloppy Joe Sandwich:

    Peel and grate the pear on a coarse grater. Peel and chop the onion, and chop or grate the garlic and ginger.

  3. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add oil, turning the pan twice, then add the ground meat, browning and crumbling it. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the pear, onion, garlic, and ginger and stir for a couple of minutes to soften. Add the soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili paste, broth, sugar, and sesame oil. Bring to a boil and reduce heat. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Serve the meat sauce on buns with green onions, fresh or pickled chilies, and quick pickles.
