Make a Sloppy Joe sandwich at its finest. Two halves of a soft bun are filled with a delicious homemade meat sauce, which is also quick to prepare. In addition to the tomato sauce, ketchup is added to maximize the richness and depth of the tomato flavor, while a touch of brown sugar adds depth. Another key ingredient in this recipe is bell pepper. It elevates the flavor of the meat sauce and the entire sandwich.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and black pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and beginning to brown in places, 6-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the ground beef with a wooden spoon or spatula, until browned and cooked through, 7-8 minutes.
  2. Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and plenty of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, 5-6 minutes. Spoon the meat sauce onto the toasted buns.
