Ellie Krieger's sandwich is a lighter take on the classic Sloppy Joe burger. She uses lean ground beef, sautéed with protein-rich red beans, tomato paste, and spreads the mixture on whole-wheat buns.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 450 g lean ground beef
  • 1 can small red or pinto beans, preferably low-sodium (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 crushed jalapeño pepper
  • 1 diced red pepper
  • 1 diced onion
  • 4 crushed cloves of garlic
  • 1.5 cups tomato sauce without salt
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. molasses
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 whole wheat burger buns

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. In a large nonstick skillet, cook the meat and onion over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, breaking up any lumps as they cook. Discard any juices from the pan.

Add the garlic, jalapeño, and red pepper flakes and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the beans, tomato sauce and paste, wine vinegar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt and pepper, reduce heat to low, and simmer for another 5 minutes. Spoon 1/2 cup of filling onto each bun and serve.
