Burgers with ground beef, tomatoes, and seasonings, which appeared in the United States in the early 20th century, went by various names. However, by the 1940s, a similar dish was already being referred to as "Sloppy Joe." In the 1960s, packages of ready-made meat sauce for these sandwiches even appeared on the US market. The dish, prepared according to this recipe, is more sweet than spicy, yet still very juicy and delicious. Incidentally, it tastes even better the next day. And the slightly sloppy appearance of these burgers perfectly suits their status as a cozy, home-cooked meal.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 kg of ground beef
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 large onion, diced
  • 1.5 tbsp. tomato sauce
  • 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • Hot sauce, such as Tabasco
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp. l. brown sugar
  • 2 tsp chili powder, or more if needed
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 tsp crushed dried red pepper, or more if needed

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Start by browning the ground beef in a large saucepan over medium heat. Drain any fat.
  2. Add green bell pepper and onion to the pan. Stir.

Then pour in 1 cup of water, tomato sauce, and garlic. Stir again, then add brown sugar. chili powder, mustard powder, crushed dried red pepper flakes, hot and Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Stir well again, then cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes.

  3. Before serving, butter the buns and toast them on a griddle or in a frying pan. Spoon a generous amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom half, then top with the other half. Serve with chips, salad, or simply enjoy the sandwich on its own.
