How to Make Applesauce Waffles
Go back Print version

Time: 25 min.
Complexity: easily
Quantity: 8 waffles

These Belgian waffles are delicious, golden, and crispy on the outside, and the applesauce added to the batter makes them moist and soft like muffins on the inside. But the best part about this recipe is that you can make delicious waffles for breakfast even if you're out of milk and eggs! Substitute the milk with a can of unsweetened condensed milk (keep it in the pantry just in case!), and the eggs with natural, unsweetened applesauce. Dust the finished waffles with powdered sugar and cinnamon and drizzle with maple syrup. A real treat!

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2.5 cups premium flour

  • 0.5 tsp coarse salt
  • 1.5 cups of unsweetened condensed milk

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat the waffle iron. Preheat the oven to 95°C (205°F) if you plan to bake the finished waffles in the oven.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, combine the unsweetened condensed milk, applesauce, brown sugar, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and 3/4 cup water.

  3. Stir the flour mixture into the liquid mixture and knead until smooth. Don't overmix; it's okay if a few lumps remain. Let the dough rest at room temperature for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour enough batter into the waffle iron to fill it to the brim and cook until crisp, 6-7 minutes. The waffles are ready when almost no steam comes out of the iron. Continue cooking in batches until all the batter is used.
  5. Keep the finished waffles in a warm oven or cover them with foil on a plate while you prepare the rest. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon and serve with maple syrup.
