Healthy Eating Tips for New Moms

While focusing on feeding a newborn, we sometimes forget about our own nutrition. Stay full and energized with these tips from the Food Network.

Advice for young parents
Motherhood is a challenging journey, especially in the first year. Don't be afraid to ask friends and family for help: a home-cooked meal delivered to your door is so much better than another sandwich. During those long days (and nights!), the stress of caring for a newborn can build up and leave you exhausted. It's crucial for new mothers to eat well and recharge, and these ideas and tips will help.
Get back to your favorite treats

Nine months is a very long time without cold cuts, hot dogs, and your favorite unpasteurized cheese, if you avoided them during pregnancy. Now you can safely indulge in your favorite snacks: they'll delight you and make a quick snack when you're short on time.
Cook and freeze

When you're culinary inspired (and have time), cook meals in large batches and freeze the leftovers as individual servings. Choose items that can be easily defrosted in the microwave. For example, chili, meatballs, tomato stew, pancakes, waffles, or our chicken soup recipe—you can add extra ingredients that provide essential nutrients for new mothers, including protein, iron, and zinc.

Breakfast for dinner

Sometimes in the evenings you won't have time to eat until the wee hours. So why not have breakfast for dinner? Whole-grain toast and eggs are a source of healthy grains and lean protein, and they're super quick to prepare.
Quick tacos

Even in the best of times, a fridge filled with leftovers can look dull. Don't try to cook something creative when you've only had two hours of sleep. Instead, microwave some tortillas and put together a small taco bar. Leftover meats, vegetables, beans, or grains can be given a second life by topping them with sour cream and salsa.
Exchange with other moms

Prepare and divide a large batch of soup into individual containers, then share with other new moms. Weekly meetings or groups for new moms are a great place to meet other families who might be interested in this kind of sharing.
Stock up on nuts, seeds and dried fruits

Of course, they're great as a snack, but they can also be added to green vegetables or yogurt for a refreshing meal. Our nutritious snack mix is great on the go and can be sprinkled on almost anything.

Make a smoothie

When you're on the front lines, it's easy to forget about fruits and vegetables. Buy washed green vegetables and fresh fruit and keep them in the refrigerator, portioned for quick blending. Smoothies are a great way to reintroduce green vegetables into your diet without the time-consuming preparation of each meal.
Order delivery

There's nothing wrong with ordering food delivery to save precious time. Make the most of this opportunity and order in bulk—you'll likely happily eat the leftovers the next day.
