This rich and chewy macaroni and cheese casserole is bursting with the flavors of three different cheeses: Parmesan, fontina, and mozzarella. It's quick and easy to make, yet looks festive, especially with the addition of diced ham. Boiled egg noodles are topped with a creamy sauce with grated cheese and aromatic Italian parsley, then topped with more grated cheese and baked until golden brown and tender. This casserole is perfect for a family holiday or a picnic.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 350 g wide egg noodles
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons flour
  • 0.5 tsp salt + extra for cooking noodles
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 cups grated fontina cheese
  • 3/4 cup finely grated Parmesan
  • 3/4 tbsp. grated mozzarella
  • 110 g cooked ham, diced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Preheat oven to 230°C.
  2. Grease a 22x32cm glass baking dish with butter. Cook the noodles in a large pot of boiling salted water until al dente, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Drain, but do not rinse.

  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream, milk, flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Stir in 1 cup fontina, 1/2 cup Parmesan, 1/2 cup mozzarella, prosciutto, if using, and parsley. Add the noodles and toss to coat. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup fontina, 1/4 cup Parmesan, and 1/4 cup mozzarella. Sprinkle the cheese mixture over the noodles.
  5. Bake until the sauce is simmering and the cheese is melted and beginning to brown on top, about 20 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
