The original Darkness and Storm cocktail recipe calls for ginger beer. But if you can't find it, this variation, which combines homemade ginger syrup with seltzer water, will do the trick. Pour dark rum over the ginger soda, making sure the layers don't mix, and serve. Stir the cocktail with a skewer before drinking.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 10 cm ginger root, cut into coins and set aside 4 pieces for serving
  • Ice
  • 1 liter of seltzer water
  • 4 shots of dark rum, such as Gosling's
  • 4 lime wedges for serving
  • 4 skewers

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, water, and ginger. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then turn off the heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
  2. Fill 4 glasses with ice. Fill each glass a third full with seltzer water. Add 1/4 cup ginger syrup and stir gently. Place an upside-down spoon in the glass and pour 1 shot of rum over the spoon, being careful not to mix the rum with the seltzer.

  3. Thread a piece of ginger and a lime wedge onto each skewer. Garnish each cocktail with a skewer and enjoy.
