Before grilling ribs with a savory glaze of store-bought barbecue sauce and molasses, Sandra Lee pre-simmers them in a mixture of vegetable broth and applesauce. This ensures the meat is juicy and cooks in a flash.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 beef rib (about 1.3 kg total), cut in half
  • 1 tsp. seasoned salts
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 cup of apple juice
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. ready barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon molasses
  • 1 tsp instant espresso or 2 tbsp strong brewed coffee
  • Sliced green apple for garnish

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Place the ribs in a large, heavy pot. Add seasoned salt, vegetable broth, and apple juice, plus enough water to cover the ribs, and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 1 hour. Remove the ribs from the pan with tongs. Cool slightly. Cut between the bones into portions. (This can be done up to 1 day in advance. Cover and refrigerate.)
  2. Preheat grill to medium heat.

In a medium bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, molasses, and coffee. Brush the ribs with the sauce. Grill until golden brown and a thick glaze forms, turning occasionally and basting with the sauce, about 10 minutes total. Garnish with green apples.

Advice: You can cook the ribs in a slow cooker at low temperature for 4 hours instead of boiling them.
