Sandwich "Monte Cristo"The Monte Cristo sandwich was likely named by Americans after the hero of Alexandre Dumas's novel, the owner of untold treasures. Perhaps there's a certain similarity to the rich composition and flavor of this dish. It's believed that the Monte Cristo sandwich was inspired by the French appetizer croque-monsieur. Local variations of the recipe exist in different regions of the United States. The finished sandwich is typically cut in half, revealing the delicious filling with oozing cheese. Sweet cranberry sauce beautifully complements the flavors of the other ingredients.

  1. To make sandwiches: Place the bread on a work surface. Spread mustard on one side of each slice. Divide half the cheese among 4 slices of bread. Top with 1/2 of the turkey and season with salt and pepper to taste. Evenly distribute the cranberries on top and top with the remaining turkey. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Top with the remaining cheese and bread. Press each sandwich lightly into the center. In a rimmed plate or platter, beat the eggs with milk and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, coating them on all sides. Place them in the skillets. Fry until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and bake until the cheese is melted, about 6–8 minutes.
