Brown Betty (also known as Mulatto Betty) is a traditional American dessert featuring baked apples with a delicious breadcrumb crust. It's best to use homemade breadcrumbs, which have been dried in the oven, to create a crispier and more textured crust. Mix them with butter, sprinkle them over the apples in baking pans, and bake. Serve this fragrant dessert warm, with a scoop of ice cream, or simply with tea.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C with a rack in the middle position.
  2. Place the apples on a flat surface, cut them in half, and then into slices. Place the apples and cranberries in a medium bowl and top with a layer of zest from 1 lemon and the juice from all the lemons.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix the butter and breadcrumbs. Season with salt.

In a third bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Stir the mixture into the apples.
  4. Grease the baking pans with the remaining butter. Place the apples in the bottom and sprinkle with the breadcrumb-butter mixture. Cover each pan tightly with aluminum foil.
  5. Place on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. The apples should be soft and easily pierced with a knife. Then remove the foil and increase the oven temperature to 220°C (425°F). Bake until golden brown. Serve immediately.
