Crispy, savory-sweet candied bacon is a wonderful appetizer for parties, breakfasts, sandwiches, or just snacking. It can also be crumbled into salads or other dishes for a richer flavor. For baking, you need thick slices of bacon to prevent them from burning before the sugar dissolves. Brown sugar is best; it will give the bacon a more caramelized, rich flavor, and a pinch of black pepper will balance the sweetness perfectly. Be sure to line the baking sheet with parchment or foil to avoid scraping off any burnt sugar. Bake the bacon under a press at a medium oven temperature for perfect results.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 12 slices bacon, about 0.5 cm thick.
  • Finely ground black pepper
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • Special equipment: 2 baking sheets, preferably the same size

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 160°C.
  2. Place the bacon slices in a bowl and sprinkle with pepper and brown sugar. Line a baking sheet with parchment or foil and arrange the bacon on top in a single layer. Sprinkle the bacon with the remaining sugar in the bowl. Place another sheet of parchment or foil on top and press it down with another baking sheet. The baking sheet will flatten the bacon as it bakes.

  3. Place the entire structure in the center of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Check the bacon by lifting the top baking sheet and parchment paper. If it's not browned or crispy yet, resist the temptation to increase the oven temperature and bake for another 10-15 minutes.
  4. Check again. Keep in mind that when you remove the baking sheet and transfer the bacon to a serving platter or individual plates, the bacon will crisp up a bit more. Be patient!
