Time: 1 hour 20 minutes plus steeping time
Complexity: easily

Strata, a savory bread pudding, is a great way to use up stale bread. This recipe gives new life to forgotten hot dog buns. Slice them, toss them with broccoli and grated cheddar, pour in eggs and cream, and let them sit until the bread plumps up. All that's left to do is bake the strata and enjoy its flavor and gooey cheese.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.

1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.

1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

  • 3 cups low-fat cream (10%)

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Grease a 22x32cm baking dish with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cream, Parmesan, eggs, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and a few freshly ground black peppers.

  3. Bring a medium saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and simmer until crisp-tender, 3 to 4 minutes; drain.
  4. Place half the bread cubes in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 1.5 cups of Cheddar, then add the broccoli. Top with the remaining bread cubes and pour the cream mixture evenly over them. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. You can also bake the same day; just let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour before baking.
  5. Preheat oven to 160°C.
  6. Let the casserole stand at room temperature while the oven preheats. Remove the plastic wrap and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar. Bake until the top is slightly puffed and set in the center, 40-50 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes and serve.
