"This breakfast casserole is better than any ham and cheese sandwich you've ever had. Pretzels are the best choice for the base. Don't substitute them! They give the casserole a deeper flavor and texture you can't get in other similar casseroles," says Jeff Mauro.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 350 g pretzel buns (3-4 pcs.), cut into 4-5 cm cubes.
  • 9 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 3 tbsp. cream 10%
  • 1 jar (200g) pickled jalapeno rings, drained
  • 220g honey ham steak, cut into 1cm cubes.
  • 170 g aged sharp cheddar, diced
  • 170 g whole milk mozzarella, diced

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Generously grease the bottom and sides of a 22x32cm baking dish. Place the bread slices in a single layer and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt, a few grinds of pepper, and cream until smooth. Add the jalapeño, ham, cheddar, and mozzarella and mix until smooth. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, stirring as needed to coat completely. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour, preferably overnight.

  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover the pan and bake the strata until the top is golden brown and the liquid is set, 45-55 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
