Make classic hot ham and cheese sandwiches even more filling and delicious by filling them with fried mushrooms and herbs, and using two types of cheese instead of one, like Muenster and white cheddar. Toast them until the cheese melts deliciously and the bread crisps beautifully, and enjoy any time of day.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 package (300 g) of mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley and/or chives
  • 8 slices of crusty bread
  • Dijon or grainy mustard, for spreading
  • 150 g white cheddar (about 8 slices)
  • 220 g thin slices of ham (8-12 pcs.)
  • 150 g Muenster (about 8 slices)
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. When very hot, add 1/2 tablespoon butter and half the mushrooms; cook, stirring, until tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer the mushrooms to a bowl. Add another 1/2 tablespoon butter to the skillet and cook the remaining mushrooms; transfer to a bowl. Add the herbs to the bowl and toss; season with salt and pepper to taste. Wipe the skillet clean.

  • Make sandwiches:

    Spread mustard on each slice of bread and assemble sandwiches with cheddar, ham, mushrooms, and Muenster. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over low heat. Add the sandwiches and cook, turning once and adding more butter if needed, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 12 minutes.
