Leftover Belgian waffles from breakfast can be used to make delicious sandwiches, replacing regular bread. Simply spread the waffles with Dijon mustard, top with slices of Swiss cheese and ham, and fry in butter on both sides until the cheese melts. If desired, substitute mozzarella for the Swiss cheese and prosciutto for the regular ham. Add a few basil leaves, and enjoy an Italian-style sandwich. Perfect for taking to work, school, or a picnic.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

  • 4 ready-made Belgian waffles
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese (or mozzarella for the Italian version), halved

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Place two waffles on a table or cutting board. Place half a slice of cheese on each waffle. Spread a little mustard on the cheese, if using. Fold each slice of ham in half and place it on top of the cheese. Place another slice of cheese on top of each slice of ham. Top with the remaining waffles to make a sandwich.
  2. Heat a nonstick skillet or cast iron skillet over medium heat.

  3. Lightly grease a griddle with butter. Place the sandwiches in the griddle and cook until golden brown on the bottom and the cheese begins to melt, 2-3 minutes. Flip the sandwiches over and cook until golden brown on the other side and the cheese is completely melted, about 2 more minutes. Serve the sandwiches hot or wrap them in foil to take to work, school, or a picnic.
