- 1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans
- 8 slices of black bread with nuts and raisins, lightly toasted
- 8-12 slices Havarti cheese (preferably caraway flavored)

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:
- In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, applesauce, and chives. Add the ham, celery, celery leaves, and pecans and stir.
- Place 4 slices of bread on a clean surface. Place 2-3 slices of cheese on top of each, then spread the ham mixture and cover with 2 lettuce leaves. Place on top sandwiches the remaining bread and cut it diagonally into two pieces.
