If you're grilling real sausages at a picnic, instead of simply throwing them on the grill, braise them in beer and onions. The flavor is much richer and more interesting, and everything you need is usually readily available: sausages, beer, onions, butter, and spices. Wrap everything in heavy-duty foil, pour the beer over it, seal the package, and grill. To make the braised sausages more appetizing when serving, simply grill them until they're charred and then return them to the onion-beer mixture. Enjoy the sausages with mustard, sauerkraut, and, of course, a cold bottle of beer. If desired, serve them as hot dogs, placing them on split buns.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 4 cooked bratwurst sausages (about 0.5 kg)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/4 cup lager
  • Long buns, sauerkraut and mustard, for serving

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Cut a 20-inch piece of heavy-duty foil. Place the onion, garlic, and bay leaf on the foil, mounding them on one side; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper. Arrange the pieces of butter on the mound and place the sausages on top. Fold the foil over the onions and sausages, then fold the edges in on both sides to seal, leaving one side open. Carefully pour the beer into the open end of the package, then seal the edges.

  3. Place the foil package on the grill, onion side down; cook for 10 minutes, then carefully flip and continue cooking until the onions are soft and the sausage is heated through, another 10 minutes. Meanwhile, grill the buns until golden brown.
  4. Carefully open the package. Remove the sausage and grill, turning, until charred, 3-5 minutes. Return the sausage to the package to toss with the onions. Serve with buns, sauerkraut, and mustard.
