What do you get when you stew pinto beans with bacon, beer, and spices? Drunken beans! Or frijoles borrachos, as they call this easy-to-make dish made with onions, garlic, and cumin in Mexico, which takes just 15 minutes. Serve it with warm tortillas or tostadas and wash it down with a Mexican beer.

Ingredients:

  • Two cans (400g) of pinto beans
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 0.5 tsp ground cumin
Substituting ingredients
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Preparation:

    Step 1
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté 3 slices bacon, 1 chopped onion, 2 chopped garlic cloves, and 1/2 teaspoon each ground cumin, coarse salt, and black pepper in vegetable oil for 8 minutes. Add 1/2 cup dark Mexican beer; simmer for 1 minute.
  • Step 2
  • Add two 14-ounce cans of rinsed pinto beans and 1 cup water; simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup chopped cilantro and the juice of 1 lime.
