French onion soup - detailed recipe.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 4 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) butter
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 1 liter of beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 4 slices toasted baguette
  • 2 cups (260 g) grated Emmental cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, sauté the onion and sugar in butter for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Continue stirring, add the flour and sauté for another 3 minutes. Then add the beef broth, red wine, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. Pour the soup into ceramic bowls, place a slice of bread on top and sprinkle with Emmental cheese.

  3. Place in the oven under the grill and bake until the cheese is melted. Serve hot.
