Chaat is the name given to various appetizers in India, and there are many variations. This sweet potato and star fruit chaat is a light salad that offers a wonderful combination of flavors, textures, and, of course, a visual treat with its colorful array of ingredients, garnished with eye-catching star fruit. This recipe makes a small serving, so you can double the amount for a larger crowd.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 450 g sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 cm pieces.
  • 1 carambola, sliced
  • 1-3 jalapeños or other green chilies, finely chopped (optional)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala spice mix
  • 0.5 tsp roasted ground cumin (or 1 tsp roasted and ground cumin seeds)
  • 0.5 tsp chili powder
  • Chutney with tamarind and/or mint and coriander, chopped fresh coriander and pomegranate seeds, for serving

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Place the sweet potatoes in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer until the sweet potatoes are tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and transfer the sweet potatoes to a large bowl.
  2. Add star fruit, jalapeño, lemon juice, chaat masala, cumin, chili powder, and a pinch of salt and stir until evenly distributed. Drizzle with chutney and garnish with cilantro and pomegranate seeds. Serve warm or at room temperature.
