- Heat vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring, for 6-7 minutes, until golden brown. Add tomato sauce, 1 cup water, vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, mustard, garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon salt.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the onions are soft, about 15 minutes. Stir in the liquid smoke and strain the sauce through a sieve.
