How to properly store beer

If you like to buy beer in bulk, it's important to store it properly so you can truly enjoy it when you open it.

For this beer you need:

1. Vertical position

Beer should always be stored upright. This is because brewer's yeast tends to settle at the bottom. If the bottle is left on its side, the yeast will settle on the side of the bottle, preventing it from mixing with the beer when you shake it. Furthermore, if the cork remains in contact with the beer for too long, its flavor will be irreparably ruined. Keeping beer upright will ensure a longer shelf life and maintain its flavor.

2. Coolness

Beer must be stored at the correct temperature. If stored in warm conditions, it will develop unpleasant odor particles over time. Storage temperatures vary depending on the type of beer. The ideal temperature is 10-12°C. Dark beers can withstand temperatures up to 15°C, while light beers store well at temperatures no higher than 10°C.

3. Darkness

Beer should always be stored away from light: in the refrigerator or basement. The darker the place where the bottles are stored, the better.

Exposure to ultraviolet light causes beer to develop components with an unpleasant taste and odor. Therefore, beer bottles are often made of brown glass to protect the drink from sunlight.

If you're drinking beer on a sunny, hot day, it's best to choose canned beer for the same reason.

4. Expiry date

When buying beer, check the best-before date. Fresh beer tastes better than old beer. It should be stored for no more than 5-6 weeks. Dark beer can be stored a little longer than this, while light beer has a shorter shelf life.

5. Bottle tightness

Air, like light, is beer's enemy. When it gets inside the bottle, it ruins the drink's flavor so much that it becomes undrinkable. That's why beer bottles often have plastic or metal corks—they prevent air from entering. Beer bottles used to be sealed with cork stoppers. Over time, the corks would shrink, allowing air to enter.

If you're drinking beer and feel like you can't handle another bottle or can, it's best not to open it. If you don't finish the drink and leave it for later, it will lose all its flavor, and you won't want to drink it again. Read on. article How to Tasting Beer.

If you enjoy experimenting, you can buy a bottle of beer and store it for a long time. Then open it and record your observations on the color, consistency, and taste. If everything works out for you, then this beer has a long shelf life and is ready to be purchased for future use. If the results aren't satisfactory, you'll have to store it for a shorter period of time or try a different beer.

However, if you have limited space in your apartment or house and stores are not too far away, buying a significant amount of beer in reserve probably isn't practical. It's better to buy and drink fresh beer right away, while it's at its best!
