This casserole could be called lazy Swedish meatballs because you don't have to roll the ground meat into balls: simply fry it, simmer it briefly in a thick, spicy creamy sauce, and bake it under a layer of Tater Tots and grated cheese. It's a two-in-one: a meat dish and a side dish.

The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 900 g ground beef (10% fat)
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground white pepper
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 1 and 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 0.5 cups beef broth
  • 1.5 cups frozen green peas and carrots, defrosted
  • 2 tbsp. l. chopped parsley
  • 1.5 cups grated sharp cheddar
  • 1 package (900 g) of Tater Tots

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the oil over high heat until shimmering. Add the onion and cook until slightly softened, about 4 minutes, then add the ground beef and 1.5 teaspoons of salt. Cook, breaking up any clumps of ground beef with a wooden spoon, until golden brown, about 8 minutes.

  3. Reduce heat to medium-high and add allspice, nutmeg, and white pepper. Sprinkle with flour and stir until fully incorporated. Add heavy cream and beef broth and bring to a simmer. Add peas, carrots, and parsley.
  4. Place the meat mixture in a 22x32 cm baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of cheese evenly over the top. Then add the potato balls and sprinkle with the remaining 0.5 cup of cheese.
  5. Bake until the potato balls are golden brown, about 40 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes and serve.
