Barbecue sauce doesn't have to be store-bought; you can easily make it at home. This recipe lets you quickly whip up a sauce using canned tomatoes, and for a distinctive sweet note, add brown sugar. Homemade barbecue sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for several days in a tightly sealed container or frozen for up to a month. It's a delicious addition to grilled meats, always on hand.



The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.
2/3 cup (st.) - 160 ml.
1/2 cup (st.) - 125 ml.
1/3 cup (st.) - 80 ml.
1/4 cup (st.) - 60 ml.
1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.
1 teaspoon (tsp) - 5 ml.
1/5 teaspoon (tsp) - 1 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, such as soybean, corn, or peanut
  • Half an onion, chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic, crushed
  • A pinch of red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 can (800g) canned whole peeled tomatoes (in tomato puree), blended
  • 1 tbsp. + 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1.5 tsp coarse salt

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:


  1. Heat vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, until lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and red pepper and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 45 seconds.
  2. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, until slightly darkened, another 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, and salt and bring to a boil.

  3. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until dark red and the sauce has reduced to about 4 cups, 25 minutes. Season with pepper to taste. Use the sauce immediately or store, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze for up to 1 month..
