This recipe offers the perfect formula for an alcoholic cocktail with endless variations. It all depends on what's in your home bar and pantry. Start with a base spirit. Add something tart, like citrus juice or even pickle juice, for a more refreshing flavor. Finally, add something sweet, like syrup or juice—whatever you have on hand—to balance the flavor. Before shaking everything in a shaker with ice, you can add an aromatic (fragrant herbs work well). Top the glass with any bubbly spirit and garnish with the proverbial cherry (which can be anything, even a dill pickle). The recipes use measuring containers with the following volumes:
1 glass (st.) - 250 ml.
3/4 cup (st.) - 180 ml.

1 tablespoon (tbsp) - 15 ml.

Ingredients for the recipe:


  • 60 ml of alcohol (such as vodka, gin, rum, bourbon, whiskey, or tequila)
  • 45 ml of acidic juice (e.g. lemon, lime, grapefruit, pomegranate without sugar, cranberry without sugar) or brine from pickles/jalapenos/giardiniera, etc. or vinegar
  • 30 ml sweet liquid (such as simple syrup, agave syrup, maple syrup, honey, orange juice, pineapple juice, maraschino syrup from a jar of cherries, or Triple Sec)
  • For aroma: sprigs of fragrant herbs or pieces of fruit, optional
  • 60 ml of soda (such as plain seltzer, soda pop, Prosecco or other sparkling wine, ginger ale, or Italian mineral water (S. Pellegrino), optional
  • Decoration of your choice: fresh fruit, olives, pickled vegetables, herb sprigs, maraschino cherries or other fruits in syrup, marmalade, or raw crunchy vegetables
