Juicy fried steak with fries is a popular combination that's hard to resist. This recipe offers a twist on the classic, infusing the dish with the flavors and aromas of Asian cuisine. Chinese Five Spice Powder is a perfect complement to this. Add a little to the fries when baking and to the steak sauce, made with ketchup and Sriracha, for a fresh twist. Serve the steak fries with a light cucumber salad dressed with vegetable oil and rice vinegar.

Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Toss fries on a baking sheet with 1/8 teaspoon five-spice seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon salt; bake according to package directions.
  2. Meanwhile, heat a grill pan over high heat. Combine the ketchup, relish, Sriracha sauce, and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon of five-spice seasoning in a bowl; set aside 2 tablespoons of the mixture for brushing the steak.

  3. Pierce the steak with a fork and season with salt. Brush a grill pan with vegetable oil, then add the steak and cook until grill marks appear, 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally and brushing with sauce.
  4. Transfer the steak to a cutting board, let it rest for 10 minutes, then slice thinly across the grain.
  5. Combine the cucumbers in a bowl with vegetable oil and vinegar, season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss the fries with the green onions and season with salt to taste.
  6. Serve with steak and spicy ketchup.
