Cooking the dish according to the recipe:

  1. Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Top one slice with American cheese and the other with Pepper Jack cheese, then sandwich them together. Using a 2.5-inch ring, cut a circle in the center of the sandwich.
  2. Crack the egg into a small bowl.

  3. In a medium nonstick skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter and grease the bottom. Place the sandwich and the cut-out circle in the skillet and cook until golden brown on the bottom, 4-5 minutes.
  4. Flip the sandwich over, place the egg in the hole, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the bread is golden brown on the bottom, the egg white is set, and the yolk is still runny, 4-5 minutes. Cover the pan with a lid one minute before the end of cooking to allow the white to fully set. The circle cut out will cook faster. Transfer the egg sandwich to a serving plate and eat, dipping the round sandwich into the yolk.
